History of Millersport, Ohio

The Beginning

The community of Millersport, Ohio was founded in 1825 by Mathias Miller as a port of trade on the Ohio-Erie Canal. In the waning days of another nearby canal-town called Monticello, Mathias brought his family along with some new other settlers only about a mile to the present location where Millersport continues to prosper today. Monticello has disappeared completely but combined with the sovereignty of God, the perseverance through the decades, and creative initiative of its residents, Millersport has done more than survived, it has flourished.

Millersport is a very beautiful community with Buckeye Lake to the east and rural farms throughout the surrounding area. A well preserved portion of the Ohio-Erie Canal cuts through the center of town enhancing the colorful picturesque community which its approximately 1200 citizens.

On Buckeye Lake

Millersport is located in the northeast corner of Fairfield County in central Ohio. It rests on the south and west banks of Buckeye Lake, an extremely popular resort area in the central Ohio region. Originally a swamp call Buffalo Licks by the early pioneers, it was cleared and became known as the Licking Reservoir. Its primary function was to supply water to the canal. Later the name was changed to Buckeye Lake as it became one of the most popular family resort areas in al of Ohio’s history.

Today, Millersport and Buckeye Lake are still thriving and are quite popular. The lake and surrounding parks cover 3,557 acres. There is boating (unlimited horsepower), sailing, canoeing, browbeating, fishing, hunting, picnicking and swimming in the summer months. In the winter the lake offers ice skating, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and motorcycle racing on the ice.

Something for All

Millersport and surrounding Fairfield County provide the lake with three beautiful parks, two public beaches, many boat launching ramps, and extensive plans for additional parks in the future. Several marinas are in the area with one of the largest boating and camping centers in Central Ohio located right here in Millersport. Businesses in turn provide tourists and sportsmen with restaurants, bait stores, park offices, service stations, grocery stores, nightclubs and a very popular old-fashioned homemade ice cream parlor.

Millersport is also the site of the second largest festival in the state of Ohio which is the annual Sweet Corn Festival. Millions of people throughout the years have come from miles around to enjoy the shows, the music, the parade, the rides and especially the exceptionally good food. Square dancing, talents shows, games, and lots of fun grace the festival each year held on the weekend just prior to Labor Day. With every conceivable kind of delicious food available, still the most popular is the steaming hot juicy sweet corn. Dripping with butter, the children and adults alike devour it with earnest enjoyment and utter delight. The profits earned by the Sweet Corn Festival help finance participating civic organizations and particularly provide through the Lions Club, eyeglasses for those children who are unable to afford them.

There is no community as small and tranquil that offers more than Millersport. The Village of Millersport has an active elected local government which serves the community by representing the hearts and minds of its most important attribute, the people. The Mayor, Clerk-Treasurer Village Council, Volunteer Fire Department and the Police Department, and all other governmental functions continually seek to maintain a community rich in history, patriotism, culture, environmental beauty, and favorable tradition. They strive to preserve the peace, safety and security for all residents. They also endeavor to enhance the opportunities of the citizens, local church, civic organizations, businesses, and the public school system. The local government has as its goal to maintain the values upon which the community has been established and build upon that foundations to assure steadily growth, progressive innovation, and healthy tomorrow.
